The Best of 2011

30th December 2011
A look back at my favorite images taken during 2011.

The Year 2011 will be remembered for a lot of negitive things that happened to the local and world ecomony which has had a bearing on my Photography. Sales are down but outlook is up and very much up. There has being a slight change in direction during the year after Peter Cox, Roger Overall and myself got together and filmed a pilot video under the banner of Circle of Confusion. This has now grown legs so to speak and we have formed our own Production company and released our first episode of The Dynamic Range - learn landscape photography.

So too the Best of 2011 Images......

We will start of with my favorite for the year taken during the filming of Dynamic Range in November. Taken from the top of Geokaun Mountain on Valentia Island looking east towards Doulus Head and Beginish Island. If you haven't watched the trailers for the video you will not understand the feeling we got that morning and the image produced.

Next up we have an image taken on the filming of the pilot episode. After the mornings filming we headed back to Castletown-bearhavan for some breakfast and to back up the memory cards. While the cards were backing up this wonderful light and clouds combination appeared. A quick setup of the camera and this is the resulting image of Castletown-bearhavan Harbor.

When you plan a location shoot it's also important to have a backup location just in case the conditions are not looking good. This is one such image. My location for the morning shoot was not going to work because of the low clouds so a quick turn around and a sharp left turn I headed up the mountains to a place call Cobduff near Bantry in Co Cork. It's locally call Cum na Leime (The Valley of the Leap). This image was taken as the clouds and mist started to clear.

The fun I had making this image. Armed with a pair of wellie I started to jump up and down in the water to make these ripples much to the enjoyment of the onlooking tourists. The Eagles Nest, Killarney Co Kerry is one of the stops for the tourists who visit Killarney. This time I had the right weather conditions. All I had to do was wait for the clouds to move into position and then do a little dance in the water and bingo my image.

And they say Photography is not real because we can 'Photoshop" the image. I'm sorry to say this put Painters are even better at cheating as they have a blank canves to start with and don't have to paint in the unwanted items in the composition. A case in point here. On my way to Glenbeg Lough I stopped to have a bit to eat and spotted a painting on the wall of Glenbeg Lough from the spot I wanted for my composition. Big disappointment when I got to the locations as the painting did not show the carpark, rubbish bins, etc. I drove on a bit around the lake and spotted this composition of Glenbeg Lough with Skellig Mountain in the background. I went home a very happy man after the initial disappointment.
