The Mourne Mountains Trip

15th August 2010
We head up North this time for my latest trip. The Mourne Mountains.

After a false start to this day trip last month, I did set the alarm clock and travel the 1.5 hours up towards Newry and Warrenpoint with Spelga Dam my location of interest. I did manage to capture sunrise along the way at the beach in Annagassan, Co Louth.
As you can see from the first image below I had a bit of mist rolling in on the surface of the water which added a bit of drama to the image. A short time later the mist lifted and the sun was able to light up the foreground rock on the shoreline as the second image shows.

This was not my first trip up in the Mourne Mts, but my first time up this early. The last time I was up here was late in the day and the sun was behind the mountains which caused a few problems with the levels and quality of light available for my next location. On this occasion I was in the right place at the right time. You are able to park your car in off the road and walk down to the River Bann. Setting the camera up in the river ( wellies, never leave home without them ) and rotating the camera to a portrait format so as to aid the composition. The foreground is ok, but I wanted something else. I walked up the river a bit and settled on this composition in the next image. By the time a setup a dark cloud was over head. This added a bit extra mood to this image compared to the first one.

After this I made my way back down from the mountains with a quick stop the capture the image that opened this article. It was time for some food and drink. A stop in Dundalk for breakfast/lunch and was ready again. However I wanted to take a look at Carlingford and The Windy Gap. It was getting near high noon and the contrast was slightly too high at times. However I did find a couple of viewpoints for another time.
